Often fruitful consequences are preceded by many hurdles and obstacles. At times one has to undergo a lot of trials and tribulations before savouring the sweet taste of success. This is also true in the case of Indian filmmaker Firoz Nadiadwala. His 2000 film Hera Pheri, which is regarded as a trademark in the comedy genre underwent a lot of alterations, modifications and menaces before it was released. Here is a list of 10 unknown facts about Hera Pheri.

  1. It was not Hera Pheri, to begin with: Director Firoz Nadiadwala, in the beginning, decided to make an action film with actors Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal and Tabu. The movie was supposed to be called Raftar.

  2. Nadiadwala changed tracks: Down the line, the director felt that an action film might not be exactly what he desires. Therefore, Nadiadwala went ahead with his project, but, with a little twist. He changed the genre and gave comedy a vantage point over action.

  3. Hera Pheri was the remake of a Malayalam film: Nadiadwala zoned in on the Malayalam blockbuster “Ranji Rao Speaking” and decided to make a Hindi remake of the film. Initially, the director had to deal with copyright issues, but, finally, the film got the green signal, and that is when Hera Pheri was born.

  4. Sanjay Dutt was initially signed in to play the role of Sunil Shetty: When the director was on the road with the action version, Raftar, Sanjay Dutt was signed in to play one of the lead roles. However, due to some legal issues, Dutt dropped out of the project, and when the film was turned into a comedy, Sunil Shetty was offered the role of Dutt.

  5. Karishma Kapoor was supposed to play the role of Tabu: Anuradha Shivshankar Panikar was a memorable character in the film Hera Pheri, and Karishma Kapoor was supposed to play the role, but, when she denied, it was passed on to Tabu.

  6. Shah Rukh Khan made a cameo appearance (but not in the sets): Khan walked in, in one of the pre-release parties with a gun. When he was stopped at the gate, an altercation ensued. According to reports, a few heated words between the director and the star marked the feud. Finally, Khan left the party with bitterness.

  7. Raveena Tandon was supposed to scorch the scenes, but that never happened: Raveena Tandon was supposed to do an item number in the film, but that never materialised.

  8. The film proved to be Akshay Kumar’s turning point: Before Hera Pheri, Kumar was not doing very well career-wise. But this film won him lots of praises, and then there was no looking back.

  9. Paresh Rawal stuck to comedy after this film: Throughout the 80s and 90s Rawal was known for playing negative roles, but, post this film comedy became his signature.

Priyadarshan productions worked with Kumar and Shetty for the first time: This film was Priyadarshan’s first collab with Shetty and Kumar. The success of this film led to the production of another side-splitting sequel, Phir Hera Pheri.
